‘Can You Travel Through A Book? ’

Project Overview

This term our REAL Project has an English and Geography focus. We will be trying to answer our essential question; ‘Can You Travel Through A Book?’ It will culminate in the children writing and illustrating a class book. As part of our project launch, the children visited Broadway Library and had a visit from local children’s author Alan Gibbons which they thoroughly enjoyed. Librarian Irene commented on the children’s excellent behaviour.

Reading is really important so we encourage you to read with your child every day (it only takes a few minutes). Please help us by writing in the blue home-school reading record when you have read with your child. This helps a lot because we can then move the children on to new books more quickly. Reading books need to be in school every day – we never know when we will be able to squeeze an extra read in. We will soon be moving to ‘Read Write Ink’ books which will be in line with your child’s current phonic knowledge.

Our PE lessons are now on Fridays. Children are to come into school dressed in their PE kit on their PE day. Please make sure that all your child’s clothing and footwear is clearly named (uniform as well as PE kits).

Last year the children used Tapestry for home learning but now they are in Year 1 we use Seesaw. Codes will be given to the children to access the app. Year 1 ‘high frequency’ words will be uploaded each Friday to practise at home throughout the week. In case of self-isolation, school work mirrored to our weekly plan will be uploaded to complete. There are lots of ways to help your child to learn their high frequency words; some ideas are: use the ‘look, cover, write, check’ method (where you look at the word and say the letters, the word is then covered up and your child tries to remember the word and writes it down then you check whether the word was spelt correctly); when more confident that your child can spell the words, see how many times they can write the word in 30 seconds (the children love this one!); chant the letters of the word whilst marching, clapping, stamping etc.
